Wallie again //

I still have yet to catch him, he's very good at evading me and now I can't even find him again. I've been up at walmart 2x every day this week, once when i get off work and again between 2-3am.

If I don't get him tonight I have to reschedule everything.

Pet Food

Time to throw out all the cat and dog kibble. Or at least take a new look at what you're feeding your pets.

In order to thrive our cats and dogs need a carnivorous diet. Sure, for the last couple decades they have survived on the garbage the pet food companies push out and the vets get paid to suggest (..*..cough*..sciencediet!..*cough*), but these foods aren't worth the money we spend on them.

When you look at the ingredients on your pets food you want to pay attention to the first FOUR ingredients. You dont want corn or any grain fillers (a LOT of our cats and dogs are allergic to grains!). You want it to list a meat. Not just "Animal by-rpoducts". You want a real meat CHICKEN,LAMB, VENISON, ETC they need to tell you exactly what they're using!

Some good quality dry foods are WELLNESS and NATURAL BALANCE. I'm a big fan of NB because it's a good quality but it's not horribly expensive.

Popular belief has people believing that dry food helps clean pets teeth. This is far from the truth and dry food can lead to many health problems. Cats in particular don't drink a lot and get most of their water from the food they eat. That's why it's important to feed wet or canned food. The brands I listed before Wellness, NB, etc are great wet foods as well.

Personally, I feed a raw/RMB diet (rmb = raw meaty bone). Everything ranging from chicken to mice is served. ProRodent.com is a good source of prey food for your cats and dogs. Some of our older pets do take longer to transition to the diet. The younger they are (or if they were stray, barn, or feral cats at some point) seem to be easier to switch.

My dog Holly, took to it easily. I was pretty shocked considering she's 6yrs old. She isn't able to handle dry food or any of the commerical chew bones, it makes her gums bleed and if she's forced to eat it she'll just go hungry. She easily eats the RMBs though.

UTI's in cats

Apparently one of our furbies has a UTI.

Which brings up a great topic how to properly prevent them.

Cats, especially males are prone to UTI's. They don't usually drink enough water, because they're picky. They're attracted to fresh running water, like your faucet sink.

You can buy expensive fountains for them. I have not seen any good reviews, many of the models grow mold easily.

I suggest letting your faucet run very slowly and placing a bowl under it, that way you're not wasting too much water and the cats can either drink from the stream or the bowl.

Another way to help, is to stop feeding dry food. Dry food does not help clean teeth. It is not better for our pets, it is actually a lot worse. So switching to a can diet or raw will greatly help out your pet.

And always providing fresh clean water ;)

San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills WAY TO GO!

San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills have all banned declawing! Finally the US is catching up with the rest of the world on this.

Found a couple farmers looking for cats so I can find homes for some of these guys. :)

FFFFFFFFREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Is such a beautiful word.
Got a bunch of free Evo dog food samples. Two bags of free Royal Canin cat food and when I got home today, someone had left a bag of dog treats on my porch lol

Found chicken for .80cents/lb so we bought 27lbs. Part of it is going to the animals.

Today was a total waste.

Pip and Squeak had a vet appointment, their owners never showed. NEVER AGAIN will I adopt to anyone under 20 or before the cats are already fixed. I figure since they already paid, they'd show but NOPE. So pissed. I donated the money to QCAWC instead.

Wallie's appointment was rescheduled for this upcoming thursday.

And I'm just super annoyed. My friend got another declawed (FULLY not just front) cat. He's not as friendly as she hoped. So her husband was talking about dumping it out in the country.

WTF Mike jumped in before I could and told them to bring it to us first.

So hopefully they won't do this to us when I catch Wallie. I'll be so pissed if I have to deal with two new additions at once, even if Wallie is going to be outside after he's fixed.

Peoria IL here we come?

A cat needs to be taken from Chicago IL to Peoria tomorrow morning. It has a home in Peoria but she can't drive that far to get him and if he's not picked up he'll be PTS. I sent an email to the coordinator stating if they can get the cat from chicago to here, I'll make the run to peoria.

We'll see.

Decided not to trap last night, too many people around and he didn't come out to eat so I just left the food where I usually do and left. Gave me more time to finish up cleaning.

I missed two days!

Dang, lol I fail already. Some friends and I are trying to post a blog for the whole month. Failure!

Good news on Wallie! Mom said she'd pick him up after his vet appointment and hold on to him over night. Talked to Mike some more and he agreed to let me trap him and hold on to him until his vet appointment.

Tonight, I'm going to make an attempt after work. So HOPEFULLY I will have pictures and a good description of the lil guys attitude. I bet he's a sweet boy, I'm just counting on it lol

Holly and I went to petco and got a new beta. Not sure what to call him. He's the same color as Fishy-bob, but he's a crowntail. not sure what Fishy-bob was. It's very pretty though and he's doing good.

I'm reporting a volunteer at petco to the rescue she was wtih. She was handling a BC mix and kept smacking him for acting up. That makes dogs hand shy and doesn't help them get adopt. What an idiot, I don't even understand why she'd volunteer if she was just going to ruin a dog.

Wallie and more kittens

My neighbor wants me to find homes for his kittens.

He said free to good home. So I said if they're free, I want a contract signed. If I'm advertising for them, I'm putting an option to get them spayed/neutered with a $30 non refundable deposit as well. Anything left over, is going to get the mom cat fixed.

Mike's getting pictures, genders, and age for me tonight.

We're having a disagreement. I want to get Wallie neutered and keep him over night. Mike is saying no. Derek can't keep Wallie over night. So I'm not sure what's going to happen now. You'd think having a cat for 24hrs wouldn't kill him. I'm going to discuss it more with him over the next couple days.

My betta fish, Fishy-Bob died last night. I changed his water, so I think I must have did something wrong btu I can't think of what it was. Rest in Peace Fishy-Bob

Wallie and a Raw diet

Wallie The Stray at Wal-Mart

Well we were having a lot of communication problems but I think we have everything figured out for the stray cat.

Fall is here now, so we're going to be trapping him any day now. I just need to get the funds up to get him neutered. I'm so hoping he's a male, it's a lot cheaper to get a male cat's vet work done here. I'm considering contacting SNAPS in IA, but if he's not feral they can't help me again. I still think he's a stray but he still won't come up to eat until I turn my back.

I have decided if he is a male that he will be called Wallie since he was found at Wal-Mart.

I ordered a free bag of Royal Canin cat food, you can too at Catster.com

It's crap food but it's free and that's the only way I'll fed anyone Royal Canin.

Speaking of food, I'm curious what my 4 readers feed their cats?

We're all on a BARF or raw diet. Princess only likes the pork and will try stealing our meal if we give her anything else. BeBe has been eating her share so I have to keep them separated and he needs to loose some weight now. Their fur is so soft and the white on BeBe and Damn-it is BRIGHT. It's gorgeous, I'm so happy we made the switch. Plus, it's really cheap if you do it right. We were super broke this week so I feed chicken for the most part since it's so cheap. I bought 10lbs for $5 and a couple odds and ends here and there, that fed my 3 cats and Holly for 2wks. I don't usually feed so much chicken though. I know it's tempting since it's a cheap protein source.

One thing I would watch out for, some animals are allergic to chicken and a couple other protein sources, chicken seems to be more common.

Our cats and dogs do NOT need grains, veggies, or fruits to survive. They thrive on a Barf or raw diet. Dogs can survive on those things, but they don't thrive on it. Cats cannot survive on them. They need TAURINE which is only found in meat. Heart and liver are good sources of taurine as well.

If feeding a Barf or raw diet seems like too much for you, I highly recommend Natural Balance. My cats were eating the Ultra formula and did really well on it. Holly was eating the Reduced calorie formula and did well. I didn't see much of a change in their coats though.

3 feral kittens and a shy stray

The 3 ferals have been adopted. My friend took one of them the night we caught them.

So the above picture is Pip (blue/white bicolor) and Squeak (solid blue) They were about 7wks old when we caught them.

Stray kitty, we don't have any pics of yet. My friend that works at walmart (ewwwww!) told me about this one. He wants to trap it and get it some where safe before fall hits. Not sure if he wants to keep Mr. shy kitty or not. I've been trying to call him so I can find out. He's a solid black cat. He looks like he'd be sweet as honey once he's calmed down. I don't think he's feral, acts like he's just scared.

Cheyenne Cherry... again

The Teen also stole a dog

*sigh* Where to start? So this teen seems to be really messed up. She seems to think saying "it was a joke" makes all her illegal activites okay.

She's facing a possible 10 yrs in prison. I think it's a fitting sentence, but really what good would it do? She'll get out in 10yrs and continue with this kind of behavior. I think if we send people to prison we should have someone get to the root of the problem. WHY are they commiting these crimes?

Until then, you'll get this individual off the streets for a couple years, but it's not going to solve the problem.

touching on dog behavior today

Domiance Theory

That's an article on a study done about the domiance theory.

When we adopted Duke he had aggression problems. I was told to alpha roll him, to walk in front, and some other things.

The alpha roll backfired horribly. He never picked up that he was to walk behind me.

We did control all food, treats, and toys though. He only got them if he did something for us and it helped with his training.

I think before anyone tries dominance, they should look into positive reinforcement and clicker training. Why scare your pet into listening when you can simply show them what you want?

FL Cat killer arrested

By Sarah Larimer, The Associated Press

MIAMI - A South Florida teenager was arrested early Sunday and accused of killing and mutilating the cats of his neighbours - a disturbing string of deaths that has horrified residents and shaken animal lovers in two Miami-area communities.

Tyler Hayes Weinman, 18, was taken into custody at a party, police said. He was still being questioned at Miami-Dade police headquarters while authorities praised the arrest at a press conference Sunday morning.

"I understand that pet owners feel very strongly about their little family members," Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson said. "Animals bring happiness and comfort to our lives. So, to see them so violated and mutilated just defies all common sense and it's painful for everyone involved. Thankfully, for this community, the terror has come to an end."

Weinman was charged with 19 felony counts of animal cruelty, 19 misdemeanour counts of improperly disposing of an animal body and four felony counts of burglary related to the cat deaths. It is unclear if he has an attorney. Messages left at phone numbers for his parents were not immediately returned and no one answered the door at his home.

"I hope it's not true," said 77-year-old Robert Ehrman, who lives across the street from Weinman and called his mother a "lovely person," but said he did not know the teen well. "It's like a death in the family, I'm sure."

Jail officials said a court date has been set for July.

In the past month, residents in the Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay neighbourhoods have reported finding more than two dozen cats killed and mutilated. Some of the dead cats were missing fur - neighbours said some had been skinned - and appeared to have been cut with a sharp, straight instrument, police said.

"It's shocking to think that someone who lives right here and is our neighbour could do something like this," said Thomas Shad, whose small black cat, Miss Kitty, was among those killed.

Shad, whose house is near Weinman's, said he had suspected a local resident might be behind the killings, which were first reported in May. Police said they investigated more than 30 cat deaths - some of them likely caused by dogs - and received hundreds of tips from concerned citizens.

Miami-Dade Police Department Maj. Julie Miller said the investigation is still open and additional arrests might be forthcoming, but she declined to name other suspects. Police said they have been watching the house where Weinman stays with his mother, and neighbours said he was taken to the police station for an interview on his prom night a few weeks ago. Weinman was still wearing a tuxedo when officers whisked him away that night, they said, and he missed the dance.

"If they do get the wrong guy and it's not him, they've ruined his life as it is right now," said 19-year-old Kyle Hantzis, who lives next door to Weinman.

Hantzis, who said his father dates Weinman's mother, called the teenager quiet and well-spoken. Authorities said Weinman was spending his summer doing odd jobs, and an online profile on Facebook.com says that he graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High this spring. By Sunday afternoon, there was already a group on the popular social networking Web site which listed its name in all capital letters as "Tyler Weinman Cat Mutilator! Justice For Miami Cat Mutilations!"

Police said Weinman was twice arrested as a juvenile, though they said they could not provide details about his previous run-ins with the law.

Hantzis said he had a hard time picturing the teen as a serial cat killer.

"I don't think, the way he acts and his demeanour, I don't think he could physically do it."

Four of the confirmed cat killings were reported on the street where Weinman lived. For the Shads, his arrest brought a sense of relief to their quiet suburban neighbourhood that they have not felt since Miss Kitty's body was found in the grassy yard of an abandoned house.

"I felt that I could rest. I was at peace with what was happening," said Mary Lou Shad, who said she cried while she watched the televised press conference on Sunday. "Hopefully he gets what he deserves."

Mutilated cats in FL

SOUTH MIAMI-DADE
3 more cats found dead in South Miami-Dade; reward rises
Three more mutilated cats have been found in Southwest Miami-Dade. Residents and police wonder who has been carrying out such heinous crimes.
BY JOSE PAGLIERY AND HOWARD COHEN
hcohen@MiamiHerald.com
The mutilated bodies of three cats were found in Southwest Miami-Dade this week, adding to the dozens that were already maimed and killed this month by an apparent serial cat killer.

The bizarre crime spree has left residents of Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay reeling as cats have been found skinned and gutted, left dead on their owners' lawns.

And the killer -- or killers -- continue to elude investigators.

''This man is getting bolder and bolder. The cat that was found this morning was skinned from the waist down, and that takes longer and longer. It is very frustrating and it is heart wrenching,'' says Dee Chess, founder of Friends Forever Animal Rescue in Palmetto Bay.

The latest incidents happened on Memorial Day when two cats were found mutilated, one at Southwest 173rd Street and 88th Avenue and the other at 165th Street and 92nd Avenue.

A third cat was found Tuesday morning by its Palmetto Bay owner, John Wellons, in the area of Southwest 174th Street and 92nd Avenue.

According to police, the cat's belly had been sliced from front to rear. Its skinned corpse was found on the southwest portion of Wellons' side yard.

He last saw his cat alive Monday at 7 p.m., police said. By daybreak Tuesday, it was lying dead in his yard. The Wellons family could not immediately be reached by telephone.

According to residents, the cats' butchered bodies have been left like mangled trophies on their owners' yards since early May. Research in psychology and criminology has shown that individuals who commit such acts of cruelty to animals often graduate to harming humans.

''Doing this to an animal is as serious as doing it to a person. Everyone is at risk -- animals and their families alike,'' said Cindy Hewitt, former executive director of Cat Network and current free-roaming cat coordinator with the Humane Society.

Authorities are warning residents to keep their cats indoors at night when these killings seem to be taking place.

To help in the effort, the Cat Network (305-255-3482) has offered to lend residents cat traps to help care for stray cats. Residents are also urged to keep outside lights on or connected to a motion detector.

Last week, the Humane Society of the United States announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in what it called ``serial cat killings.''

The reward was increased to $3,500 via Crime Stoppers. Tax-deductible donations are also being accepted to increase the reward amount.

Miami-Dade police are investigating, with the assistance of the county's animal services division.

Detective Bobby Williams, a Miami-Dade police spokesman, said investigators are looking for people to come forward with information about the killings. ''However small the information might be, it might be something we can use in the investigation,'' he said.

One problem that has hampered the investigation is that victims have removed the evidence -- the bodies -- before calling the police.

''I can appreciate the emotion behind that, but police need to examine the crime scene,'' Hewitt says.

``It's just as important with an animal murder as with a human. If you find an animal that may be a victim, don't touch it.''

Instead, experts ask that residents call 305-4POLICE immediately and cover the animal with a plastic bag, rather than cloth, which can taint evidence. Do not move the body or place it inside a bag.

Residents are also mobilizing by distributing fliers at local veterinary clinics, pet stores and other high-traffic businesses in the two communities.

''I'm still surprised by how many people don't know about this,'' Hewitt says.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Or they can call Miami-Dade Detective Dominick Columbro at 305-234-4237 or Miami-Dade Animal Services Investigator Fernando J. Casadevall Jr. at 305-884-1102, ext. 240. To make a donation, checks should be made out to Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers and Donation-Cats should be printed in the subject line. Mail checks to 1030 NW 111 Ave., Miami, Fl., 33172.
On June 3, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old resident of the Bronx, for allegedly killing a two-month-old kitten by burning her to death in an oven. In addition to cruelty to animals, Cherry was charged with multiple counts of burglary, arson and criminal mischief. Under New York State law, Cherry is considered an adult and faces more than 10 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Cherry admits that she broke into the home of an ex-roommate on May 6 with the intent to "play a joke and mess up her apartment." Cherry and an accomplice allegedly threw bleach on the walls of the apartment, slashed furniture and stole various items. Before leaving, the pair put the victim's kitten, Tiger Lily, into the hot oven.

When police arrived at the Bronx apartment to investigate smoke complaints, Tiger Lily was found dead. Her remains were taken to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where veterinarians had to perform a necropsy to determine the sex of the badly burned kitten.

According to Joseph Pentangelo, Assistant Director of ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement, Cherry's explanation for placing the kitten in the oven was simply: "I hate cats."

Kitten is baked in an oven, act of revenge

BRONX, N.Y. (WPIX) - A Bronx teenager is accused of burning a kitten to death in an oven, in what investigators believe was an act of revenge.

Humane Law Enforcement agents of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say Cheyenne Cherry, 17, burned her ex-roommate's kitten to death in an oven. Following her arrest Wednesday, ASPCA agents say Cherry brushed off the incident as a joke.

"I hate cats," Cherry allegedly told investigators when asked about the heartless crime.

According to officials, Cherry and an unidentified juvenile allegedly broke into Valerie Hernandez's Tinton Avenue apartment on May 6 and trashed the place. They then tossed the woman's two month-old kitten, Tiger Lily, into the oven and cranked up the temperature, ASPCA assistant director Joe Pentangelo said.

Cherry told authorities that she and her accomplice "thought we would play a joke on Valerie and mess up her apartment."

Pentangelo says the suspect and the accomplice left the apartment as the cat cried and scratched at the oven door.

Firefighters found the female cat's remains smoldering in the oven after neighbors complained of smoke coming from Hernandez's apartment.

Cherry and her accomplice also allegedly slashed Hernandez's furniture, unscrewed light bulbs and threw bleach on the walls, officials said.

Pentangelo said the kitten was burned so badly a necropsy had to be performed to determine its sex.

Cherry was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, burglary, arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. She was released into the custody of her mother. The unidentified juvenile involved in the incident has not been arrested.

Lucky, Kittens, stray cat

So all the kittens have been adopted. Their mom, Lucky was, but she was returned a couple weeks later.

She might become my moms cat. She's living with them and mom is enjoying her. Says she's very friendly and just an overall nice cat.

A stray kitty came up about a month ago. I'm still trying to catch him so we can get him some help. Here's a video and some pics I took. We had to leave him outside because at the time we didn't have any room. Now we do but he's nowhere to be seen.

Designer Dog breeds and Tiny Toys, teacups

*sigh* Where to begin?

People have the misconception that I hate mutts. That I don't like these dogs.

That's far from the truth. I don't hate "yorkie-poos", I don't have anything against teacup chi's.

My heart hurts for those dogs.

These are the dogs you see in puppymills. Shoved in tiny cages and forced to breed and breed so selfish humans can make a quick buck. These so-called breeders don't care about these dogs. They just want your money.

Tiny toys, teacups, etc are not healthy dogs. They take runts, breed them, and then you have these sickly dogs with organs that are too big for them. It's not right. Why breed animals that are going to suffer? They cost hundreds in vet bills because of this.

They shouldn't be supported. You're supporting the suffering of these animals.

If you want one, get it from the shelter.

new fosters

She's about two years old. We're calling her Lucky because St. Patrick's day is so close. She's got 4 kittens born on 02/23/2009. We're still looking for a home for one, possibly two of the kittens. Lucky also needs to find a home. She'll be tested for FIV/FeLV, get her rabies shot (1yr), and spayed. The kittens will be fixed and vaccinated as well.

Break down of Chole's law.

Basically, you have to keep paper work on your animals and be able to produced them when asked.

Plus you can't separate a kitten or puppy from it's mom until it's 8 weeks old. Which is already illegal in IL.

Purgatory tested positive for FeLV yesterday and had some other health problems, he passed away at 2:20pm

Update on the Fosters

So the person interested in Princess never got back to me. No one seems interested in Ted at all and he's such a cute cat! He's making great progress as well. He's tolerating the dogs and other cats more and more. He could probably go to a home with other animals. Still should go to a home with older children though.

Princess is being more social. She's playing with all of the other cats and willingly coming up to humans. Before you had to hunt her down and force your presents on her lol

She hunted down a mouse the other day. I was shocked, she had some troubles getting it because she doesn't have any front claws but she knocked it around enough that she was able to catch it in her mouth before BeBe took it away. He's such a pain.

The mouse was a feeder mouse by the way, no rodents take residence at my house! They'd be crazy to do so.

I'm hoping to get a video of them both up soon. More pictures are needed as well.

I forgot! We weighed everyone

Ted 10 lbs
Princess 11 lbs
BeBe 11 lbs
Purgatory 9 1/2 lbs
Damn-It 13 lbs

I switched their food from Natural Balance to Wellness, so we'll see if the weights go up or not. I might have to change Princess's diet. The males all look fine but she's turning into a beach ball haha

Coupons, Princess

Might have a home for Princess.

Got some of the coupons in, one for $5 off, the other for $3 off.

I'm probably jumping the gun but I'm going to go get a packet together to send with Princess, along with some of the cat food she's been eating so she doesn't get sick.

I want to give her hairball medicine too. Hopefully this lady can wait a while. I don't want to give her too much medicine all at once so she vomits or something.

Had to give all the cats tapeworm medicine. Purgatory and BeBe def. have them. So fucking gross. It was only $20 for 6pills and I have 2 left over. Damn-it needs to finish his, he only took part of it. I'm going to try again later with that though...

Cat food

I contacted a bunch of cat food companies and most are sending me coupons, some are sending free samples. I contacted Petco and they told me to talk to the store manager to see if they'd be able to give me any discounts or free food for the strays/ferals. So that's pretty damn awesome!

We gave Ted tapeworm medicine. He started to show signs of having them, which explains why he's so small, so hopefully that's taken care of. I hate giving it to them, it's really hard to get them to take the whole dosage. He's 9 1/2lbs!! wow!

Princess might be going back up for adoption soon, more on that next week I hope. She's been doing really well.

Purgatory and Damn-it are fighting a lot though. I stopped spraying feliway around though, so I started doing that again.

I have a video of Purgatory and Damn-it showing how smart they are. I should work with them more but it's so cold I don't want to get out from under my blanket and all the kitties around me are keeping me nice and toasty warm! lol

Declawed and Outside

I am so angry!!

I was at my mom's house, while Mike and his dad were trying to get the full tank of gas out of the beretta nad into the new car.

So I'm playing with Ted, that stray cat she found eating out of her garbage a couple weeks ago...And I notice he isn't using his claws to grab the toy, he's trying to scoop it. Which is how Princess plays.

So I said "Mom, I don't think Ted has any claws"

She didn't believe me. So I grabbed his scruff (he'll bite hard when he gets upset) and had her press down on his front paws.

Sure enough, some fucking asshat dumped this poor cat in the field with NO CLAWS. NO DEFENSE and hoped he survived. Maybe, they probably didn't give a rats ass if he did or not. It's a miracle the coyotes didn't eat him.

I couldn't believe it. I just want to hurt the people that did that to him. I'm strongly against declawing in the first place but to dump a cat outside like that? BULLSHIT.

I'm still angry but I can't think of anything to say to get this off my chest.

Mom was trying to trade me cats. Which just sucks. We shouldn't have to sit there and discuss which cats would do better n which situation to make sure they all have homes.

Monday, January 5, 2009

Having a really hard time getting Princess to a vet. It's like forcess outside of our control are conspiring against us.

Anyway, we were watching Changling last night (Great movie btw) and kept hearing a cat crying. After making sure it wasn't one of our four, we looked outside.

Didn't see it, still heard it. So I set some food and water out.

I'll try trapping it later. Still trying to get the one male at my mom's house, but her cats and dogs keep going in the trap and eating the food! Grrr...
